IKEA Menu Causes Outrage Among Employees and Customers


I've got to admit it on this one, whoever came up with this idea had a very bad idea.

A menu in an Atlanta Ikea store caused quite a bit of a stir this on June 19th. Saturday marked the first celebration of the Juneteenth holiday, but some people in that store took issue with the contents of the menu.

Management decided to honor the meaning of the day by adding some different food items to the daily menu. Their choices did not sit well with some of their employees who were advised of the food items the day before. In fact, 33 of them did not report to work the next day. They wanted to have input as to what foods they would have added, but management did not talk to them about the menu.

A few employees spoke to a local reporter but insisted on remaining anonymous. They objected to the menu because it included fried chicken, watermelon and collard greens. They felt that, since slaves ate watermelon all those years ago, it was inappropriate to serve watermelon that day.

“You cannot say serving watermelon on Juneteenth is a soul food menu when you don’t even know the history, they used to feed slaves watermelon during the slave time,” an anonymous employee said.

The store manager understood their message and apologized.

As I said, whoever came up with putting fried chick and watermelon on the menu for Juneteenth was not thinking using their brain. At the same time, why are you going to get offended over some food? I'm not offended by any food, even crackers. It's food.

If people are going to live happy lives, they've got to quit being offended by everything in the world. Nobody is trying to be racist against black people by serving these foods. They forget that Atlanta is a city that is largely black to begin with. It may have been black people who cooked up the food.
