CBS News reporter Nora O'Donnel was interviewing California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was responding to the recent Monterey Park Shooting.
Police say 72-year-old Huu Can Tran gunned down patrons Saturday night at a ballroom dance hall in Monterey Park, where tens of thousands attended Lunar New Year festivities earlier that evening. Tran later killed himself as police closed in on him.
O'Donnell got into a back-and-forth discussion about the 2nd Amendment during the interview.
Below is a partial transcript:
NEWSOM: It's a disgrace.
O’DONNELL: We found the governor here in Monterey Park not far from the dance studio where at least 11 were killed.
NEWSOM: Nothing about this is surprising. Everything about this is infuriating.
O’DONNELL: California has the strictest gun laws in the U.S.
NEWSOM: I mean the Second Amendment’s becoming a suicide pact.
O’DONNELL: But there are many in this country that support the Second Amendment and are lawful gun owners.
NEWSOM: Yeah, I have great respect, I have no ideological opposition to people reasonably responsibly owning firearms and getting background checks and getting trained.
O’DONNELL: Authorities say the shooter used a modified pistol with a high-capacity magazine. But how did he get a gun that’s illegal in the state of California?
NEWSOM: Exactly we’ll figure it out. That’s gonna happen. We gotta enforce laws, this falled through the cracks but that doesn't mean you give up.
Law Enforcement is baffled about the motive surrounding the shooting.
“What drove a mad man to do this? We don’t know, but we intend to find out,” LA Sherriff Robert Luna said.
From the Associated Press:
A man who said he had been a longtime friend of Tran told The Associated Press that the gunman once frequented the dance hall and another that he also targeted and griped about the way he thought people treated him there.
Tran fired 42 rounds at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, killing 11 people and wounding nine. He then drove to another nearby dance hall where an employee wrestled the firearm from him.
On January 23, 2023, there was another shooting in California allegedly carried out by a 67-year-old Chinese man.
Breaking: A 67-year-old Chinese man has been arrested over another mass shooting in California. At least seven people were shot dead in San Mateo county. The shooting follows the Monterey Park killings, also by an older Asian male. https://t.co/gjth7ae2hH
