Shootings are always a tragedy. Mass shootings are especially horrifying. Radical progressives immediately race to blame these tragedies on the guns. Sorry, but guns do not kill people. Mentally deranged people who gain access to firearms are responsible.
You can “slice and dice” it anyway you want to, but that’s the truth. Another target of the progressive, gun-grabbing left is certain types of guns. Despite handguns, knives, and blunt objects killing more people than rifles, liberals want to confiscate long guns, especially AR-15s.
They wrongly refer to the AR-15 as “weapons of war,” or even “weapons of mass destruction.” The gun is neither. An AR-15 is not a weapon of war. It is far from a weapon of mass destruction. That category is reserved for massive bombs. But that doesn’t stop the narrative.
If Joe Biden and his gun-grabbing radical leftists want to label something a “weapon of mass destruction,” consider all the deadly Fentanyl they’re allowing to flood across our southern border. But AR-15s aren’t being falsely tagged as the mass murder culprits everywhere.
In fact, in one North Carolina county, these guns are being looked at as a strategic way to help improve school safety. That’s quite a reversal from demanding that every single AR-15 in the country needs to be rounded up by law enforcement.
Madison County, North Carolina, has set in motion a proposal to place semi-automatic rifles (AR-15s) in all six of its county schools. The plan would begin during the 2022-2023 school year. School officials believe it will help ensure enhanced security against an active shooter.
Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood made the announcement. Sheriff Harwood said that the rifles will be stored in secure safes at the county’s elementary, middle, and high schools. There will also be a supply of breaching tools and ammunition.
The guns and the emergency response items will be available to law enforcement in the event of an emergency. Recently, Harwood spoke to the Asheville Citizen Times about the new plan. The sheriff said, “We were able to put an AR-15 rifle and safe in all of our schools in the county.”
He believes that having these emergency items on-site will help law enforcement respond far more quickly. In the event of an active shooter crisis, this plan will save time and help law enforcement. Harwood insists that the plan has the potential to save lives.
He hopes that the items are never needed, but having them there is comforting to school officials, parents, and students. The knowledge that these schools are fortified with emergency response items may also work as a strong deterrent.
The Madison County decision comes after the tragically woeful response to the Uvalde, Texas school shooting. Harwood wants his deputies to be prepared. Officers in Uvalde say they were ill-equipped to engage the shooter, so they hesitated. As a result, children died unnecessarily.
This safety plan shows that guns are not the villains. An AR-15, the nation’s most popular hunting rifle, is not the problem. The villains are mentally deranged people who should not own a firearm. Kudos to Madison County officials for securing the safety of their children.
