Any time a criminal breaks out of jail, it is a cause for concern. That level of concern is amplified when the escaped prisoner is facing murder charges. Casey Cole White walked out of the Lauderdale County Detention Center last week.
The 38-year-old murder suspect’s escape was abetted by 56-year-old Vicky White. White is the assistant director of the detention facility located in Florence, Alabama. The two were last seen Friday morning on surveillance video.
The pair was last seen in the video ditching a marked vehicle in a Florence parking lot. Authorities believe they initially headed west towards Huntsville. The two fugitives are considered armed and extremely dangerous.
The escape caught prison officials totally off guard. Vicky White was scheduled to retire. Lauderdale Sheriff Rick Singleton said, “Everybody thought she was going to retire. Nobody saw this coming.”
While White had sold her home recently, apparently in preparations for her retirement, most find it hard to believe she was a willing participant. But there hasn’t been any evidence uncovered to dispute that this wasn’t an orchestrated escape between the two.
Evidently, White said she was taking the prisoner to the county courthouse. She said there was an evaluation scheduled. Afterward, she planned to stop at a doctor’s office. White said she wasn’t feeling well. However, court records show that there wasn’t an evaluation scheduled.
Furthermore, a body language expert called in to help track the fugitives says the “escape was methodically planned.” As the manhunt entered its second week, startling new revelations about the escaped murder suspect have been uncovered.
U.S. Marshals issued an updated release about White. Investigators found that during pre-sentence reporting in 2015, White threatened his ex-girlfriend and her sister. He said, “if he ever got out, he would kill them.” Casey White also said “he wanted police to kill him.”
Authorities and local law enforcement have contacted the potential targets to warn them. The US Marshals’ office released new pictures of the inmate. The shirtless photographs reveal numerous tattoos.
One especially caught officials’ eyes. It was a tattoo image affiliated with the Alabama-based white supremacist prison gang “Southern Brotherhood”. Images of Vicky White have also been posted. Investigators believe that the guard may have altered her appearance.
Experts indicate she may have dyed her blonde hair dark and cut it short. Interviews with other detention center inmates have revealed that they believe the pair also was developing a strangely close relationship. None of the inmates interrogated seemed surprised by the escape.
Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for a 2015 crime spree. His crimes included home invasion, carjacking, and a police chase to elude arrest. In 2000, White was charged with the brutal stabbing of 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway. The outcome of that trial is pending.
Authorities are also digging into a case previously ruled a suicide. It involves one of Casey White’s former girlfriends. 14 years ago, Christy Shelton died from a shotgun blast to the chest. Shelton’s family believed she was murdered. They never gave up hope.
UPDATE: Both suspects were captured and White died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
